How DiamondRank Works
DiamondRank ranks youth baseball teams using real game data — based entirely on who you played and how you performed. No politics, no opinions, no committees.
The goal: more competitive games, better competitive development, for every team.
Every game you play produces a single number called your Game DR. Your overall DiamondRank is the average of all your Game DRs, scaled to a 50–99 range within your age group.
Game DR = Opp DR + RD
Your opponent's rating + how you performed against them
The Real Value: Competitive Development
The ranking itself isn't the point — it's the tool that helps coaches schedule games that actually matter for their team's development. Use the DR difference to understand how competitive a game will be:
Once your team is ranked, use the Find Competition tool to search by matchup tier, distance, and age group — and see which teams have open availability. Every game you schedule should serve your team's competitive development.
Filter by Date
Pick a specific date to see only teams with open availability that day — turning the rankings into a real scheduling tool.
Team Availability Calendar
Post your open dates and field locations so other teams can find you when they're looking for a matchup. Other coaches see your open slots directly when they request a game.
Beyond Scheduling — The Bigger Questions
Every coach faces three questions that are harder than they look:
"What teams should we play this weekend?"
Find Competition answers this today — search by matchup tier (Competitive, Challenging, Significant), distance, age group, and available date. Every game you schedule should serve your team's competitive development.
"Is this the right tournament for us?"
Compare your DiamondRank to the field already signed up. Know before you commit whether you'll be competitive — or overmatched.
"Which division should we sign up for?"
Before a season starts, your DiamondRank tells you exactly where you belong. No more guessing whether to go up or stay down.
As more teams join DiamondRank, these decisions stop being guesswork. The data answers them for you — and eventually, tournament directors will use DiamondRank to build fair divisions and seed teams automatically.
The goal is simple: more competitive games, better competitive development, for every team at every level.
What Every Term Means
DR — DiamondRank
Your overall team rating, on a scale of 50–99. Higher is better. Think of it like a GPA for your team — it reflects your entire season of results in one number. Updated every time a game is verified.
Opp DR — Opponent DiamondRank
Your opponent's DiamondRank at the time you played them — not their current rating. This matters because it reflects how strong they were when you actually faced them. If your opponent wasn't yet ranked (fewer than 5 games), their Opp DR defaults to 75.0 — representing a league-average team within the age group.
RD — Run Differential
Runs scored minus runs allowed in a single game, capped at ±12. A win by 8 runs gives you +8. A loss by 3 gives you -3. A 20–0 blowout is capped at +12 — this prevents teams from running up scores just to inflate their rating.
ARD — Average Run Differential
The average of your RDs across all games. A positive ARD means you outscore opponents on average. ARD measures how dominant you are on the field, independent of who you play.
SCHED — Strength of Schedule
The average Opp DR across all your games — how tough your competition has been. A high SCHED means you've played strong opponents. Playing up in competition, even with losses, can strengthen your rating.
Step-by-Step: How Your DR Is Calculated
This walks through the concept step by step. In practice, DiamondRank solves every team in an age group at once, so ratings stay consistent with each other rather than being built one game at a time.
Calculate RD for each game
For every game, subtract runs allowed from runs scored. Cap at ±12.
Add Opp DR to get Game DR
Add your RD to your opponent's DiamondRank at the time of the game.
Average all Game DRs
Add up all your Game DRs and divide by the number of games. This is your raw rating.
(90 + 73 + 80) / 3 = Raw Rating: 81.0
Normalize to 50–99 (DiamondRank)
All raw ratings within your age group are scaled to a 50–99 range. The best team gets ~97, the weakest ~52, and the average team lands around 75.
~97
Best team
~75
League average
~52
Weakest team
DRs are relative to your age group. An 85 in 11U and an 85 in 13U are not directly comparable — each group is ranked independently.
How Game Verification Works
Team A uploads their GameChanger box score
Team B is immediately notified by email and/or SMS to verify.
Team B has about a week to upload their box score
We'll send a couple of reminders along the way. If both scores match, the game is verified immediately.
Still no response — auto-verification
If Team B hasn't responded, the game is auto-verified using Team A's score. Auto-verified games count toward the 5-game minimum and are included in rankings — but at reduced weight to reflect that only one side confirmed the result. Both teams are notified and can still dispute afterward.
🏟️ League admin results
Some leagues use GameChanger's league admin tools and can export official results directly. When DiamondRank loads a game this way, it's marked league verified — full confidence weight, same as a two-team confirmation, shown with a stadium icon in your transparency stats so its source stays visible. Most leagues don't run their season through GameChanger admin tools yet, so if you don't see this badge, nothing's wrong — your league games are just being verified the normal way, between the two coaches.
🏆 Tournament admin results
Some tournament directors use GameChanger's tournament admin tools the same way, exporting official results that load as tournament verified — same full confidence weight, shown with a trophy icon so its source stays visible. Same as league games: if your tournament doesn't run through GameChanger admin tools, its games are verified the normal way instead, and that's completely expected.
What if my opponent isn't on DiamondRank?
Games against unregistered opponents always count, but use a default Opp DR of 75.0 — representing a league-average team. These games are never auto-verified and are marked as lower-confidence in your transparency stats. Once they register and get ranked, their actual DiamondRank is used going forward.
Requirements for Getting Ranked
Minimum 5 games (verified or auto-verified)
DiamondRank needs enough data to produce a meaningful rating. Both fully verified and auto-verified games count toward the 5-game minimum. Teams appear as PROVISIONAL (under 5 games), DEVELOPING (5–9 games), or ESTABLISHED (10+ games) in rankings, reflecting how much data backs their DR.
Ratings update after every verified game
As soon as a game is verified, all affected teams' ratings are recalculated. Your DiamondRank always reflects your most current performance.
Unregistered teams can appear in the system
Any team can appear in game histories and rankings once a game is uploaded against them — even without a subscription. Their own DR stays hidden until they register — but once they've played 5+ games, their real performance-based rating (not just the 75.0 default) is already factored into opponents' Opp DR and strength of schedule. A registered team can invite unregistered opponents directly from their dashboard. Once they sign up and verify their games, their DR becomes publicly visible.
How Season-to-Season Rollover Works
At the end of each season, your DiamondRank doesn't disappear — and it doesn't carry over unchanged either. DiamondRank uses an 80/20 carryover formula that preserves continuity while acknowledging that teams change every year. Rosters turn over, and even when they don't, players develop at their own pace — a growth spurt or a big jump in skill can change what a team looks like from one season to the next.
Starting DR = (Final DR × 0.80) + (75 × 0.20)
Example: Final DR of 88 → Starting DR of 85.4
Your team dashboard and profile show all three numbers so you always know where you stand:
2027 Starting DR: 85.4
2027 Current DR: 82.1
Final season DRs are preserved permanently as historical records and never change.
Understanding the Confidence Indicator
Every team in the rankings shows a Confidence % — the percentage of their ranked games that are fully verified, whether by both teams confirming a box score or by an official league or tournament admin result:
80%+
High confidence
50–79%
Moderate confidence
<50%
Low confidence
A team can be rated 88 with Low Confidence, while another rated 82 has High Confidence. That context matters when deciding who to schedule.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does DiamondRank know what a team's rating was at the time of each game?
DiamondRank recalculates ratings across all teams whenever new verified games are added. Multiple calculation passes ensure that each team's rating reflects the strength of the opponents they played throughout the season — early-season games use each team's rating at that point in time, not their current rating.
Do auto-verified games count toward the 5-game minimum?
Yes. Auto-verified games count toward the minimum and are included in your DiamondRank — but at reduced weight, since only one team confirmed the result. This is shown transparently in your team's confidence rating. The best way to maximize your rating's reliability is to get your opponent to verify promptly — and if they're not on DiamondRank yet, you can invite them directly from your dashboard.
Why does a 75 in 11U and a 75 in 13U mean different things?
Each age group is ranked independently. A 75 means "average for your age group" — not that your team would beat or lose to a 75-rated team from a different age group. Rankings are designed to help you find good matchups within your own age group.
What is the Confidence rating?
Confidence reflects how much of a team's ranking is backed by fully-verified data — whether that's two-team confirmation or an official league or tournament admin result. A team with 10 games all verified has high confidence. A team with 5 games all auto-verified has lower confidence. A high DR with low confidence tells coaches to treat that rating with more caution — and to prioritize verifying their games.
Can teams game the system?
Several safeguards make this difficult: run differential is capped at ±12, games must be verified by both teams, auto-verified games are down-weighted, and the confidence indicator flags teams with low verification rates. We're continuously improving these guardrails as the dataset grows.
What's the difference between a league, tournament, exhibition, and scrimmage game?
When you upload a box score, you'll label it as one of the first three below. All three count the same toward your DiamondRank — the label is just for clarity, not weighting:
League — a regular-season game against a divisional opponent, part of your organized league's schedule.
Tournament — a pool-play or bracket game played as part of a multi-team tournament.
Exhibition — a game arranged directly against an outside opponent that isn't part of your league schedule or a tournament bracket (sometimes called a "friendly" or crossover game).
Scrimmage — an informal practice game (often intra-squad or a quick rep session with a nearby team), not an official result. Scrimmages shouldn't be tracked in GameChanger in the first place, so there's no scrimmage option in DiamondRank either — they're never uploaded, and never count toward DR.
What if we played a team that isn't on DiamondRank?
Games against unregistered opponents still count, but use a default opponent rating of 75.0 — representing a league-average team — until they join. You can invite your opponent directly from your dashboard. Once they register and confirm the game, their actual DiamondRank is used.
What happens if my opponent doesn't verify our game?
If your opponent doesn't respond after about a week, the game is automatically verified using the uploaded score. We'll send a couple of reminders along the way. You can still file a dispute after auto-verification if the score is incorrect. Auto-verified games count at reduced weight in rankings to reflect that only one side confirmed.
Does my team need to be registered to appear in rankings?
Any team can appear in game histories and rankings once a game is uploaded against them — even if they haven't registered. Their record, runs, and opponents are visible either way. Their numeric DiamondRank stays hidden (shown as "Register to view") until someone claims the team, though — only registered Team accounts can manage their profile, upload results, verify games, and access Find Competition. If your team appears in the rankings without a subscription, you'll see an option to claim your profile.
What if my team plays in multiple age groups?
Mixed-age teams register at their highest age bracket under a single Team subscription. They will receive separate DiamondRank ratings for each age group they compete in, and appear in rankings for both.
What counts as a "season"?
A season runs 12 months from the date of purchase. You can upload games and access rankings for that full period.
Can a verified game be disputed?
Yes. Either team can file a dispute on any verified game, including auto-verified games. DiamondRank admins review all disputes and make a final decision based on the uploaded evidence.
Is DiamondRank available for softball or other sports?
DiamondRank started with youth baseball, but the ranking engine isn't baseball-specific — it works for any sport where teams play head-to-head games with scores. Softball is next on our roadmap, and other GameChanger-tracked sports aren't far behind. If you coach one of these and want DiamondRank for your sport, let us know — demand shapes what we prioritize next.
